Fostering Independence

Hi Angie and Tahasha,

I wanted to thank you both again for your kindness and understanding, and to share a major breakthrough that occurred. Laurene is taking cooking classes here in Spokane through the City’s adaptive recreational services. She will not attend anything without her dad being present, so the joke is that they are both taking cooking classes. She asked Laurent after class what he was working on and he replied paper work (background check) so that he can accompany her in Walla Walla. This morning she approached us and told us that she doesn’t need us full time at SOAR in Walla Walla and that she wants to try it there on her own, like the others. She stated how much she likes the two of you. We were so overjoyed to finally hear these words that we cried. What this means for her is that she has found her safe and happy place and is ready for independence. What this means for us is that we can bring her to SOAR events, settle her in and leave and go have dinner together, just the two of us, for the first time in over 10 years! Thanks to both of you.
